Polycystic ovary disease (PCOD), commonly known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), is a prevalent hormonal disorder that affects women, especially during their reproductive years. PCOD can disrupt a woman's menstrual cycle, resulting in irregular periods, endangering her general health, and causing long-term problems such as diabetes and infertility. However, do you have PCOD? Here are some warning signs to be aware of.

  • Irregular periods: One of the most prevalent symptoms of PCOD is irregular menstruation. Women with PCOD may miss their periods or experience severely irregular cycles. It is related to hormonal abnormalities that disrupt the ovulation process.
  • Excessive hair growth: Another significant symptom is hirsutism, or excessive hair growth on parts including the face, chest, and back. This is due to the ovaries producing more androgen, or male hormones.
  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight: Women with PCOD may complain of unexpected weight gain, particularly in the stomach. Insulin resistance, which is common in PCOD, can cause the body to be unable to adequately metabolize fat and sugar, which can lead to weight gain.
  • Acne and oily skin: Acne, particularly on the face and back, can be caused by hormonal imbalance. Another symptom of high androgen levels is greasy skin.
  • Thinning hair or male-pattern baldness: Women with PCOD may have thinning hair on the scalp, similar to male-pattern baldness, due to elevated amounts of male hormones in the body.
  • Fertility issues: One of the main reasons for infertility is PCOD. Ovulation irregularities may make it difficult for women with this condition to conceive.

PCOD is curable with the correct medication and lifestyle modifications. Symptoms and overall health can be significantly improved with early detection and vigorous therapy. By eating a balanced diet, exercising frequently, and seeking medical assistance, women with PCOD can successfully control their symptoms and lead healthy lives.
