Urinary Bladder cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cells of the urinary bladder, the organ responsible for storing urine. While it may sound scary, understanding the basics of this condition can help you better recognize the signs, know your risk factors, and feel more empowered to take control of your health.
What Is Bladder Cancer?
Urinary Bladder cancer occurs when cells in the urinary bladder begin to grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. Most bladder cancers begin in the urothelial cells, which line the inside of the bladder. The good news is that bladder cancer is often caught early, especially since it tends to cause noticeable symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in the urine, which may appear pink, red, or dark brown. Other signs can include frequent urination, pain during urination, or feeling the need to urinate but being unable to. If you notice any of these symptoms, it's important to see a doctor, but remember, blood in the urine doesn’t always mean cancer—there are other conditions, like infections, that can cause similar symptoms. Your doctor may order cystoscopy, Urine cytology and CT scan to properly assess the inside of your urinary bladder. Only doing ultrasound can miss early-stage disease.
Risk Factors
While anyone can get bladder cancer, certain factors may increase your risk. Smoking is the leading cause, as tobacco chemicals can damage the bladder lining. Being exposed to certain chemicals in the workplace, having a long history of bladder infections, or being over the age of 55 can also raise your risk. Men are more likely than women to develop bladder cancer.
Early Detection is Key
Bladder cancer is highly treatable when caught early. If you’re at risk or experience symptoms, talk to your doctor. The earlier the diagnosis, the better the treatment options.
Taking steps to stay aware and healthy could make all the difference.
