Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA) is a disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly targets and destroys its red blood cells. This condition leads to a shortage of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, causing fatigue, weakness, and other symptoms. AIHA can be categorized into warm or cold types based on the temperature at which the immune system attacks the red blood cells. Warm AIHA is more common and occurs at normal body temperature, while cold AIHA happens at lower temperatures. Diagnosis involves blood tests, and treatment may include corticosteroids, immunosuppressive drugs, or in severe cases, blood transfusions. Managing AIHA requires a comprehensive approach, addressing both the immune response and underlying causes.
