Prostatitis is inflammation of the prostate gland, often resulting from bacterial infection, but can also occur due to noninfectious causes. It can manifest as acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), or asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis. Symptoms include pelvic pain, discomfort during urination, urinary frequency, urgency, and sexual dysfunction. Diagnosis involves medical history, physical examination, and sometimes urine tests or prostate fluid analysis. Treatment depends on the type and severity of prostatitis and may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medications, alpha-blockers, or physical therapy. Lifestyle changes and stress management techniques may also help manage symptoms.
