An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall near the navel. It is common in infants and often resolves without treatment by age 1 or 2. In adults, it can develop due to pregnancy, obesity, heavy lifting, or persistent coughing. Symptoms include a bulge near the navel, especially when coughing or straining, and discomfort. Diagnosis is based on physical examination. Treatment may involve watchful waiting or surgery to repair the hernia, especially if it becomes incarcerated or strangulated. Recovery is usually quick, and complications are rare.
